Common dog aggression types
Spotting early signs of aggressive behavior
Dogs are keen to every movement in or around the household, this is their home too so they watch and listen to everything and react accordingly. You must be aware of where they are too and any past history of aggressive behavior in a given situation.
The most common aggression type to watch out for is dominance...Dogs usually express signs with their face or body first. Look out for body stiffening, a raised wagging tail and growling. If the dog is outside they often produce a certain pitch while barking at what they perceive as a threat, or growling which you may not always hear.
If your dog is permanently outside make sure the containment area or yard is effective at keeping them in; some examples are a high enough fence and no holes to escape under the fence. This is the most common way dogs get out and attack or bite someone. Routinely check for holes, dogs can dig one very fast.
#2 Fear Aggression - Fight or Flight? When dogs are around people or animals unknown to them or in a situation they previously experienced fear, be very, very alert. Sometimes dogs may try to get away, if it's their territory they likely will try to attack. If no escape route is available this leaves very limited options. If the person or animal backs away, acts afraid fearful or is hurt [example a young child is trying to pet but is hitting] or scared, the fear will escalate.
